The area of Liptov is rich in culture and is characterised by folk architecture and Liptov is surrounded by the highest mountains in Slovakia: Vysoké Tatry, Západné Tatry and Choč hills are on the north, Nizke Tatry is on the south, Veľká Fatra is on the west and Poprad is on the east. The river Váh runs 43km through Liptov . You can also find Liptovská Mara Dam.
This region offers excellent skiing and hiking and also less traditional sports such as paragliding, rafting, horse riding , mountaineering, hunting and fishing. Liptovsky Mikulas
The town of Liptovský Mikuláš is the administrative, economic and cultural centre for Central Liptov. The Liptov Region forms the best keep secret of Northern Slovakia. On its territory are a number of temptations such as its splendid countryside, the underground beauty of its caves, thermal swimming pools and the Liptovská Mara water reservoir . Also to be found is a living archaeological museum, the ruins of castles, architectural folk buildings, museums, galleries and native folklore. There are also a wide number of possibilities for tourists such as water sports, cycling and Winter sporting activities. All of these activities attract thousands of visitors each year. With the growing number of tourists there has been a large improvement in accommodation, restaurant service and many new fitness and squash centres have sprung up as well as new saunas, solariums and other forms of entertainment.
Liptovská Mara DAM
Is a considerable recreation centre in summer. Liptovska Mara is a dam on the river Váh. It was built in the years from 1969 till 1975. The height of the dam is 45 m and is the second biggest shoot dike in Slovakia. The dam with balanced reservoir can hold an estimated 365 million metres cubed of water (most on SR). The houses were removed to an open-air museum in Pribylina. A Gothic-renaissance manor-house from Parizovce, authentic Gothic churches from Liptovska Mara, Sielnica and valuable rustic houses of folk architecture have also been moved. Only the articular church from Paludza was moved to near the village Lazisko. Swimming and Recreation
Year after year thousands come here to relax. There are refreshing natural thermal baths, surfing, yachting, windsurfing, miniature golf, fishing and sailing. There is also a scenic boat trip to Liptov with 80 person capacity. There is camping in Liptovsky Trnovec on the northern shore of Liptovská Mara. In Trnovec there is camping, with room for 140 tents. A buffet, kitchen and accomodation in bungalows is available for hire. A beach, sporting facilities, miniature golf, harbour, yacht port, rental boat, a water safeguarding service and a diver training centre all add to an already magical area. Scenic boat

Thanks to its excellent location and abundant and varied natural beauties, the Liptov region boasts many hiking options. The visitors can choose from a wide range of hiking trails of varying difficulty level. Liptov is surrounded by the highest mountains in Slovakia: High Tatras, West Tatras and the Choč mountains in the north, Low Tatras in the South, the Veľká Fatra mountain range in the west, and the Poprad valley in the east. Good orientation in the mountain environment is ensured by marked trails. The major long-distance trails are marked by red colour. Blue, green and yellow colours are used to mark local trails. All the marked hiking trails start from towns, villages or tourist resorts. The orinetation in the mountains is also supported by information boards, direction signs and maps. Hiking maps can be purchased in Information Centres. You will experience unforgettable moments when conquering the well-known landmark summits of the Liptov region - Ďumbier, Bystrá, Veľký Choč, Baranec, Jakubiná, Salatín or Poludnica. You can also set out for beautiful more-day hikes up on the mountain ridges of Low Tatras, Veľká Fatra, or take a hike in the long valleys Prosiecka, Kvačianska and Demänovská. Biking
Biking enthusiasts can find optimum conditions in Liptov, as a highway passes through the Liptov region from Ivachnová to Važec, thus the other roads wih much less traffic are just the right ones for this kind of sport. Favourite routes lead around the liptovka Mara Reservior, through the Čiernovažská valley or Demänovská valley, and many tourists combine hiking with biking trips. Rafting
The dam reservoirs are used for water sports and boat cruises. The river Váh invites for downriver boat trips, with the most beautiful sections being in the Považie and Liptov regions. The whitewater slalom park with 4 slalom courses and a whitewater club is in Liptovský Mikuláš - the venue of the traditional Tatry slalom. The river Čierny Váh is navigable from its confluence with the Ždiarsky stream above the village of Liptovská Teplička. The river Biely Váh is navigable from Važec in the snow melting season. The downriver trip can go on to Borová Sihoť near Liptovský Hrádok, or can continue as far as to the Liptovska Mara reservoir. Downriver trips are not recommended further downstream due to a number of dams on the way. The wild mountain stream Belá is formed at Podbanské as a result of confluence of several streams originating in the mountains of West and High Tatras. It is only navigable when its water level is high. When the water level is high, an experienced water sportsperson can manage its current already from under the bridge at Podbanské - 940 m, from where the distance to the point where it flows into the Váh river in Liptovský Hrádok - 628 m - is 21.9 km, with an altitude difference of 312m. The traditional Tatry whitewater slalom has been held on Belá since 1949. Skiing
The Liptov region boasts a wide range of ski slopes for all categories of skiiers. Apart from downhill skiing, it offers many ski hiking and cross-country skiing options. The most renowned winter sport resorts are located in the following destinations: Demänovská Dolina - Jasná, Chopok , Malinnô Brdo - SKIPARK Ružomberok. The resorts of Podbreziny, Opalisko - Závažná Poruba, Žiar - Žiarska dolina are located near Liptovský Mikuláš. Another ski resort is located 12 km from Liptovský Mikuláš in the small spa towm of Liptovský Ján. Liptovský Hrádok offers its services in the Dovalovo ski resort. We should not forget the renowned ski resort of Čertovica near the Vyšná Boca village, and we also recommend paying a visit to the SMREČINY resort in the village of Liptovská Teplička. The beauties of Liptov and its abundant recreation options attract numbers of tourists.
